10 DOs and DON’Ts while you use FACEBOOK

With Facebook exploding into existence and evolving rapidly in just a couple of years, it’s not easy for users to grasp the unspoken rules of the social interactions within. Still, there is a general agreed upon courtesy or etiquette for online communication which we can apply to the phenomenal social networking site. Nevertheless, there is no such thing as hard and fast rules for spontaneous social interactions because they are ever-changing.

The following etiquettes are therefore not something which we should all strictly abide to. Rather, I must emphasize that they are purely guidelines to enhance our social interactions and experience with Facebook. The fact is that there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to social interactions. So, I encourage all of you to take these with a grain of salt and apply them as you deem fit!

Five Dos:

1. Message Private Matters Instead of Posting On Wall

As much as you may have exhibitionistic tendencies and wants everyone to know your most intimate secrets, others may not share the same inclination. Your friends might not take it too kindly when you post what they did last night at your house party, or any other stuff which are understood to be kept between your closest friends.

The fact is that most of their Facebook friends will hear about it in such a public platform. The walls indeed have ears, especially so for the Facebook Wall. Best to keep these conversations behind closed doors in Facebook Messaging.

2. Be Mindful Of What You Post

When you have hundreds of friends and acquaintances in Facebook, you have people from all kinds of backgrounds, all with different jobs, beliefs, personalities, etc. Updating your status with a general statement may seem harmless to you, but others may read it in a different light. For example, you make a remark about how advertisers con unsuspecting consumers into buying something they don’t need.

What you may not realize is that some of your friends in the advertising industry could see your status in their newsfeed. It’s a general statement, but they might think you are targeting them. Of course, it’s not going to be any fun if you’re going to consider all the possible misinterpretations before you post anything, but just be mindful of it.

3. Call Rather Than Post Personal News

This isn’t just Facebook etiquette; it’s social etiquette or even common sense. If you need to inform your friends or your family about some important and personal news (e.g. death in the family), don’t declare it out in the public domain. Facebook is a social networking site; it’s supposed to be public. This means that people can know what happened.

The other reason not to post is courtesy. It’s the same reason why you shouldn’t use SMS (or even the phone) to break up with someone. It’s rude and insincere to break important news, be it good or bad ones, without having some form of genuine communication through voice tones and body languages.

4. Reply To Comments Especially If They Are Questions

You post a status, and your friends make comments and ‘like’ it. I guess the least you can do is to acknowledge them by replying something, especially when they are questions directed to you. I’m not saying you should do it for the sake of doing it, but add on to their comments once in awhile. If you ignore them all the time, chances are that they won’t bother about your status anymore, lest they look silly talking to a wall. It’s almost karma.

5. Avoid Posting Comments On Every Post

If you’re stalking your friend, leave it at that. Don’t make it a habit to make some comment on everything your friends post or they’ll start to get suspicious. Even if you say with all honesty that you are not stalking them, it’s not going to be easy for them to believe that their status updates always appear on your newsfeed.

It’s open secret that everyone checks out their friends’ profile every now and then, but to comment on everything is to admit that you are constantly checking out on them. What is even worse is that your friend’s friends might notice as well, seeing that you are a ‘regular’ commenter. If you don’t wish to be labeled a pest, try to limit your comments somewhat.

Bonus: Be Careful Of Your Tone

As with all other online communication, communicating in Facebook is mostly textual. We can neither hear the voice tone nor see the body language when the other person ‘speaks’. In other words, it’s easy for someone to think you are being sarcastic when you are not, or misunderstand you in any other manner for that matter. To complicate things, everyone has their own typing style.

One way we can compensate for the lack of cues is to use emoticons. It’s pretty limited, but experience has taught me that a simple smiley face after a sentence can do wonders by neutralizing any potential tension. Smile and the whole world smiles with you 🙂

Five Don’ts:

1. Make Friend Requests To Strangers

Some people have this idea that the number of ‘friends’ you have in Facebook is a status of your popularity in real-life. That may be true if these ‘friends’ are people whom you know offline, and not strangers whom you randomly add while browsing through the Facebook network.

The idea becomes warped when people add friends merely for the sake of boosting their ‘popularity indicator’ among their peers. That’s not cool. But if you wish to add someone for some valid reason, like to get to know this girl you have a crush on, do so with some introduction or through a mutual friend. Skipping that step only leaves a bad impression of you, which is the last thing you want.

2. Tag Your Friends In ‘Unglam’ Shots

Guys may take it lightly when they are tagged in photos that look as if they just woke up from the bed, thinking that it’s a joke pulled off by their friends. When it comes to gals though, appearing ‘unglam’ means a lot more to them. Of course, this applies to some guys as well. What you need to take from this rule is to be sensitive of who you might be tagging in photos, especially those shots which are obviously awfully taken.

3. Overshare Yourself

Checking out the updates on your newsfeed, you see the same friend updating his status over and over again. Not any insightful ones, but just posts about what he’s doing every ten minutes. How exciting. You decide to hide his posts.

Sounds familiar? Probably. It’s annoying because no one is really interested in their friends’ everyday mundane activities, yet it just keeps popping out in their updates. Spice up your status updates a little. Instead of telling your friends you’re in the can taking a leak, share something interesting about yourself.

4. Vent About Your work

Facebook is a double-edged sword when it comes to its social networking capability. The boon is that it enables us to connect in an unprecedented manner with friends of friends of friends through the identification of mutual friendships. On the other hand, the bane is that there’s easily a way to gather information about you by passing through such layer one-by-one.

Even with your most stringent privacy settings, there’s still a risk that what you post can reach people you wouldn’t want it to reach, and your co-workers and boss are the last people you want to mess with. So, just play safe and leave your venting to somewhere private.

5. Post Chain Status Updates

Remember those chain e-mails that demand you to forward to all of your friends or you’ll die a horrible, horrible death? Well, Facebook has a similar kind of chain, but usually for a good cause. Someone first post a status update about a social cause, encouraging those who read it to post the status too, so that their friends will get to read it and post it as well. This chain thus spread the cause, raising public awareness.

The intention here is right, but sometimes too much of a good thing isn’t good. When you see your newsfeed updates filled with the same status, you get annoyed instead, and you associate your negative emotion to that social cause.

Bonus: Flame Others

Everyone is entitled to state their own opinion on the free internet, so there’s no need to put anyone down just because you disagree (or worse, don’t like the person). Sometimes I even see people criticizing the comments of their friend’s friend who replied to the post, whom they don’t even know. It’s embarrassing not only to yourself, but to your friend as well.

In the spirit of good conversations, let’s keep this in mind in whatever communication we have online, in Facebook, forums, emails, etc. Don’t ruin it for everyone.


At the end of the day, it’s entirely up to us to follow these etiquette rules. I guess it’s about finding the balance between the being fun and sensitive to everyone. On one hand, we shouldn’t restrict ourselves with rules and regulations that would limit our creativity and spontaneousness of our social interactions. On the other hand, we ought to be aware of the publicness of Facebook to protect our privacy and at the same time respect the fact that each one of us forms part of the Facebook experience of everyone else. Find that right balance and you’ll not only better that experience yourself, but also help others enjoy it as well!

Facebook is starting to roll out some interesting new changes to mobile user profiles, starting with those of you on iOS. Here’s how to change your profile picture to a looping video clip on the Facebook iOS app.

The profile changes were announced earlier this week, but they’ve just started to roll out to users the last couple days. Facebook mobile profiles on iOS now have the user’s picture focused in the center of the screen, and you can also curate the information that appears at the top of your profile. The most interesting part of the update, however, is the support of GIF-like profile pictures. Here’s how to set up yours:

Open up your Facebook app on iOS.
Go to your profile page and tap your profile picture.
Select “Take a New Profile Video” or “Upload Video or Photo.” If you don’t see those options, the update hasn’t rolled out to you yet and will say “Coming Soon.”
Select or record your video (the length is limited to seven seconds).

Right now the update is only for some iOS users, but the feature should be rolling out to all mobile users soon. The only way to know if you’ve got the update right now is to open up your Facebook app and see. Once you add a profile video, though, any user mobile or desktop will be able to view it.

Why won’t facebook let me change my Page Name?

The way you can change the facebook page name is only by going through the bot that Facebook has deployed. Here is a way you can change your name:

1. Change the name by just adding your new name to the current name with a hyphen like this “Current name- New name”.

By doing this you are telling facebook bot that you are not changing the entire name but just adding a word to it. Facebook will accept the change and will not allow you make changes for the next 7 days.

2. After 7 days or 8 days change the name again to the name you want by just deleting the current name or old name, leaving the page with just the new name like this ” New name”.

Here again, you are telling the bot that you have not made any big change but just deleting a word from the current name.

Robert Scoble uses Notes to promote new products and features from Rackspace, and to drive traffic to the company blog.

Also, post notes to inform your fans of important news about your business or industry, as well as update customers on a current situation or crisis your business is handling.

Plus, create notes to share additional details about current Facebook contests or promotions. You may also want to write a Facebook note to recognize your top Facebook fans or customers.

Before you decide to use Facebook Notes in lieu of a blog on your website, there are some important points to consider.

First, you never know when Facebook may change its mind and take out the Notes app, in which case you could lose a lot of content. Even if you could back up the notes, you’d still lose all of the engagement.

Second, all of the benefits of your content marketing (traffic, backlinks, social shares, etc.) would be directed to Facebook instead of your website.

Third, there is no way to customize. On your blog, you can use your website’s main menu, sidebar, post footers and pop-ups to get people to opt into your mailing list, submit contact forms and purchase products. With a Facebook note, you only have the option to include a text link back to your website and hope people click through.

Here’s how to create your own Facebook notes on profiles and business pages.

Create Notes on Facebook Profiles

To access Facebook Notes on your personal profile, click on the More link beneath your personal profile cover photo.

Click the More drop-down to manage your profile sections.

If you don’t see Notes in this list, you will need to click on the Manage Sections option. There, you will be able to check the box next to Notes to activate the feature on your profile.

Select Manage Sections and check Notes to activate the feature on your personal profile.

Once activated, Facebook Notes will appear in your More drop-down.

After you activate the section, Facebook Notes will appear in your personal profile menu.

To create a new note for your Facebook personal profile, click on the + Add Note button at the top right of the Notes interface.

Use the + Add Note button to add a new note to your Facebook personal profile.

This will bring up the new Facebook Notes Editor.

When you add a note, Facebook redirects you to the Notes Editor.

Using this editor, add a header photo for your note, edit the title, write text and insert photos. Hover over the lines icon, which will pop up to the left of your cursor, to access formatting elements for the body of the note.

At the bottom of the Notes Editor, there’s the option to delete your note, update the privacy settings, save the note as a draft or publish it.

Actions for your note are at the bottom of the note editor.

Once you publish your note, an update will be added to your timeline, and will be shown to your connections in the news feed, based on your privacy settings. Your note will also appear in the Notes box in your personal profile’s left sidebar.

Edit your note at any time. Just click on the Edit Note button on the top right of your note.

Friends will be able to like, comment and share your note from the news feed update or on the note itself.

Set your note’s privacy to public, like this one, and share the link with anyone. Even those who are not logged into Facebook will be able to read it.

Manage Existing Notes

If you created notes in the past on your personal profile, or if people created notes and tagged you in them, they will also appear in the left sidebar of your personal profile.

To access the Notes interface, either click on Notes in your profile menu or in the left sidebar. From there, you will be able to manage the notes you have created and those where you have been tagged.

If you’d like to remove a tag or hide a tagged note from your personal profile, click on the note and select the appropriate option.

Keep in mind that once you hide the notes from your timeline or remove your tag, you will not be able to access them again from your profile.

Create Notes on Facebook Pages

You can create notes for your Facebook pages; however, they still use the old Notes interface.

To access your page’s notes, go to the page settings. Click on the Apps link in the left sidebar. Then add the Notes app.

Notes will move up to the Added Apps section. Click on the Go to App link to access your page notes.

You will see any notes you’ve published, as well as drafts you’ve saved, in the Notes interface. To add a new note, click the + Write Note button.

There are a few differences between the Notes Editor for personal profiles and business pages. For instance, the pages editor does not allow a cover photo, centered image captions or header tags.

To add links you must use the full URL or HTML code. When you upload photos beneath the note, they are represented by a snippet of code within the text.

Like notes published on your personal profile, you’ll get a URL to share the note with others. However, there is no privacy option for pages, so all notes can be viewed publicly.

While the Notes interface for pages is less modern and has fewer editing options than the interface for personal profiles, it produces similar results.

Plus, pages have the added bonus of an RSS feed for their notes.

1. You’re directionless

I find that companies without a digital strategy (and many that do) don’t have clear strategic goal for what they want to achieve online in terms of gaining new customers or building deeper relationships with existing ones. And if you don’t have goals with SMART digital marketing objectives you likely don’t put enough resources to reach the goals and you don’t evaluate through analytics whether you’re achieving those goals.

2.  You won’t know your online audience or market share

Customer demand for online services may be underestimated if you haven”t researched this.  Perhaps, more importantly, you won’t understand your online marketplace: the dynamics will be different to traditional channels with different types of customer profile and behaviour, competitors, propositions and options for marketing communications. There are great tools available from the main digital platforms where we can find out the level of customer demand, we recommend doing a search gap analysis using Google’s Keyword planner to see how you are tapping into the intent of searchers to attract them to your site, or see how many people interested in products or services or sector you could reach through Facebook IQ.

3. Existing and start-up competitors will gain market share

If you’re not devoting enough resources to digital marketing or you’re using an ad-hoc approach with no clearly defined strategies, then your competitors will eat your digital lunch!

4. You don’t have a powerful online value proposition

A clearly defined online customer value proposition tailored to your different target customer personas will help you differentiate your online service encouraging existing and new customers to engage initially and stay loyal. Developing a competitive content marketing strategy is key to this for many organizations since content is what engages your audiences through different channels like search, social, email marketing and on your blog.

5. You don’t know your online customers well enough

It’s often said that digital is the “most measurable medium ever”. But Google Analytics and similar will only tell you volumes of visits, not the sentiment of visitors, what they think. You need to use other forms of website user feedback tools to identify your weak points and then address them.

Insufficient resource will be devoted to both planning and executing e-marketing and there is likely to be a lack of specific specialist e-marketing skills which will make it difficult to respond to competitive threats effectively.

Even if you do have sufficient resource it may be wasted. This is particularly the case in larger companies where you see different parts of the marketing organization purchasing different tools or using different agencies for performing similar online marketing tasks.

9. You’re not agile enough to catch up or stay ahead

If you look at the top online brands like Amazon, Dell, Google, Tesco, Zappos, they’re all dynamic  – trialling new approaches to gain or keep their online audiences.
